United States Helps Re-Construct School Sports Hall in Obrovac

For Immediate Release
June 10, 2005

ZAGREB, CROATIA, JUNE 10, 2005 - On Monday, June 13, U.S. Ambassador Ralph Frank will join the Mayor of Obrovac, Mr. Grgo Sosa, to mark completion of a U.S.-financed humanitarian assistance project in the city of Obrovac. Other Croatian Government and local officials also plan to attend. Activities will begin at 12:00 noon.

The Ambassador will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the sports hall for primary and secondary school students in Obrovac. This project involved the removal of the damaged structure and construction of a new facility that will serve the town's students and residents. This successful project was achieved through the combined efforts of the U.S. military's European Command (EUCOM), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Croatian Government. The total value of the U.S. contribution to this construction project and the earlier construction of the elementary school is $650,000.

This sports hall now joins other projects in Gorice, Batinjani, Maljevac, Vukovar, Pakrac, and Petrinja, which were reconstructed with U.S. monetary assistance through EUCOM and USAID, and in close cooperation and financial cost-sharing with the Ministry of the Seas, Transportation, Tourism, and Development.

This project represents the continuing commitment of the United States and EUCOM to assist the Republic of Croatia. Since 1992, the U.S. has provided over $407 million to Croatia to strengthen democratic institutions and to support political, economic and social reforms essential to creating and sustaining a better future for all Croatians regardless of ethnic heritage.
