United States, Croatia Hold Workshop on Higher Education Reform

Zagreb, Croatia, June 15, 2005 - The United States and Croatia held a workshop June 9-11 in Opatija to discuss higher education reform as Croatia moves toward compliance with the Bologna Convention.

The U.S. Embassy brought to Croatia ten American specialists to discuss four specific themes: institutional research, finance and management, academic faculty issues, and student issues. Seventeen Croatians participated, representing the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport, the University of Zagreb, University of Split, University of Osijek, University of Rijeka, and the University of Dubrovnik. Representatives from the University of Zadar were unable to attend.

Leading the U.S. delegation was Charles Knapp, President Emeritus of the University of Georgia and former director of The Aspen Institute. Delegation members included specialists from Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.

Croatian participants were led by Professor Vlasta Vizek-Vidovic of the University of Zagreb. Professors, students, university administrators, and Ministry officials participated.
