Launch of the South East Europe Regional Energy Demand Planning Project
For Immediate Release
September 7, 2005
ZAGREB, SEPTEMBER 9, 2005 - Representatives of South East European countries are meeting in Zagreb to launch a Regional Energy Demand Planning Project with U.S. assistance, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
This will improve the balance between energy supply and demand in South East Europe. It will achieve this by fostering improved energy planning in the region, establishing a mechanism to discuss and update information using a consistent planning framework, and examining future investment opportunities in energy efficiency, renewables and cogeneration. The project will also examine changing patterns in the use of natural gas.
A Steering Committee meeting for the new project will be held at the Energy Institute "Hrvoje Pozar" on September 9, 2005.
USAID is the primary assistance organization of the United States Government. Since 1992, the United States has provided over $407 million to Croatia (much of it through USAID programs) to strengthen democratic institutions and assist in postwar reconstruction and the return of refugees, to support de-mining and economic development, and to provide educational and training opportunities. The U.S. has also provided guidance and support to the Croatian judicial and military sectors to further Croatia's integration in Euro-Atlantic institutions.
