U.S. To Honor Croatian Professionals

For Immediate Release
October 31, 2005

Zagreb, Croatia, October 31, 2005 -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is hosting an awards ceremony to honor Croatian citizens who attended USAID-sponsored professional development programs in the United States and around the world. The ceremony will be held in Zagreb at Regent Esplanade Hotel, Thursday, November 3, at 2:30 p.m. USAID Mission Director William Jeffers will present the Certificates of Achievement.

The USAID Europe and Eurasia Participant Training Program (PTP), administered by the American non-profit NGO World Learning, sponsors a broad range of short term technical training to promote economic growth and democracy.

The awards ceremony will honor the one hundred and seventy-one Croatian participants who attended programs during the last year. Participants represent a broad spectrum of Croatian society including ministry officials, mayors and other members of local government, NGO representatives, judges, members of Parliament, political party officials, and business representatives. The training programs took place in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Germany, Malta, Estonia, Finland, Slovakia, and the Netherlands.

USAID is the primary assistance organization of the United States Government. Since 1992, the United States has provided over $407 million to Croatia (much of it through USAID programs) to strengthen democratic institutions and assist in postwar reconstruction and the return of refugees, to support de-mining and economic development, and to provide educational and training opportunities. The U.S. has also provided guidance and support to the Croatian judicial and military sectors to further Croatia's integration in Euro-Atlantic institutions.
