Zagreb, Croatia, November 18, 2005 -- On November 18th, United States Government funded a one day workshop for 30 Croatian County State Attorneys, who are based in the regions where the prosecution of the majority of the war crimes cases will occur.
The workshop was organized by the American Bar Association, Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA CEELI), in cooperation with the Judicial Academy of Croatian Ministry of Justice and it is a part of the professional training program titled "Improving Capacity for Adjudication of War Crimes in Croatia".
The lectures have been delivered by the professor Dermot Groome, a legal scholar with extensive prosecutorial, investigative and international experience. Professor Groome served as a national prosecutor at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. As a former senior trial attorney at the Office of the Prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, professor Groome prosecuted some of the most senior officials indicted by the Tribunal. The main objective of the workshop was for the Croatian prosecutors to address all critical issues regarding the investigation, prosecution and trial of the high profile cases, including the discussion about the challenges. Professor Groome shared the practical experience with the Croatian prosecutors about the substantive and procedural aspects of investigating and prosecuting senior political, military and police officials.
