SUCCESSFUL PROSECUTION OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AND CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE: TECHNIQUES AND STRATEGIES FROM THE AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE

Zagreb, May 12, 2006 -- On May 11 and 12, the United States Government sponsored a professional seminar in Rijeka on prosecuting sexual assault. Forty-nine Croatian judges, prosecutors and police officers attended the seminar, which was organized by the American Bar Association's Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI) and the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT).

U.S. experts from the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Metropolitan Police offered insight into American law enforcement techniques when confronting sexual abuse, including treatment of adult and minor victims, child interviews, collection and analysis of evidence, the use of science in cold cases and issues regarding the prosecution of sexual assault committed during an armed conflict.

The two-day seminar offered a unique opportunity for Croatian law enforcement and legal professionals to exchange their knowledge and experience with their American colleagues.
