United States Marshals Return To Croatia and Share Investigative Expertise

Zagreb, September 19, 2006 - Eleven months after their last visit, the United States Marshals have returned to Croatia to continue their International Training Program. With funding from the U.S. Embassy's program to enhance Croatia's investigative capacity, seven criminal investigators of the U.S. Marshals Service are in country providing training to Senior Croatian Law Enforcement Instructors. "Training the trainers" is a vital part of the overall International Training Program, created by the U.S. Marshals Service. The training program is being hosted at the Croatian Police Academy.

Through lectures, discussions and practical exercises, the U.S. Marshals Service's International Training Program enhances officer's investigative capabilities while augmenting their survival and tactical skills. The course is based on the U.S. Marshals successful "regional" concept in which law enforcement officers from different agencies and countries work together to confront criminal elements while strengthening community and law enforcement relations.

This two week segment of the program was organized in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice's International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP). Program manager, Chief Inspector Rowntree, thanked the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Croatia, the U.S. Embassy Zagreb and the DOJ/ICITAP for the privilege to train the Croatian Police. Chief Rowntree also stated, "It is this type of interagency and international cooperation that has led to numerous arrests of dangerous fugitives throughout the United States and the world."


The United States Marshals Service is the nation's oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement agency. With a total of 3,067 deputy Marshals nation wide, the US Marshals service arrests more federal fugitives than all other law enforcement agencies combined. The mission statement of the International Training Program of the U.S. Marshals' Investigative Services Division is to provide quality, specialized training to foreign law enforcement officers to enhance fugitive investigations and apprehension capabilities worldwide. The U.S. Marshals Service has developed country-specific training programs designed to strengthen skills in making arrests, fugitive identification, and developing comprehensive fugitive investigations.
