Zagreb, Croatia, April 11, 2006 -- The U.S. amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) arrived Split today for a port visit. The ship is part of the Expeditionary Strike Group 8 (ESG-8), which deployed from Norfolk, Va. on Nov. 7 and has spent the last four months supporting Maritime Security Operations in the 5th Fleet Area of Operations.
This port visit provides the opportunity to spend time enjoying the local culture while serving to strengthen the Navy's regional relationships, which produces a more secure maritime environment in theatre.
While in Split, Carter Hall officers will enjoy lunch with member of the Croatian Navy, host a group of children, engage in sports events, and participate in a community relations project.
Carter Hall's 350 Sailors and 300 Marines will have a chance to sightsee, shop and enjoy recreational activities.
The visit recognizes the established cooperation between the United States and Croatia. ESG-8 combines six U.S. Navy ships in the Nassau Strike Group and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable).
