SPLIT, Croatia (October 18, 2006) -- The U.S. guided missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) arrived here today for a port visit. The ship is part of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, which deployed from Norfolk, Va. on October 3rd. The ship is en route to support Maritime Security Operations in the 5th Fleet (Southwest Asia) Area of Operations.
This port visit provides the opportunity to spend time enjoying the local culture while serving to strengthen the Navy's regional relationships, which produces a more secure maritime environment in theatre.
While in Split, Mason officers and crew will enjoy crew exchanges and a basketball game with members of the Croatian Navy. Approximately 25 volunteers from the Mason will paint a fence at the Antuna Mihanovica School in the City of Drnis on October 19th.
Mason's 300 sailors will have a chance to sightsee, shop and enjoy recreational activities.
The visit recognizes the established cooperation between the United States and Croatia.
