USAID CELEBRATES FOUR YEARS OF ASSISTANCE TO CROATIAN AGRICULTURE AND AGRIBUSINESS

Zagreb, February 21, 2007 - USAID assistance in the agriculture sector helped increase the annual buy-off value of agriculture products by $100 million over the past four years. This assistance helped more than 100 partner organizations representing more than 11,000 Croatian family farms to increase the quality and quantity of their products. To celebrate this, USAID is hosting "Taste the Products of our Partners" featuring a wide array of agricultural products, recipes, and specialty food products from these partners. The event will take place at the Regent Esplanade Hotel in Zagreb on February 22, 2007 at 13:00.

Since 2002, USAID has provided technical assistance and training in collaboration with Croatia's leading food companies, including associations and cooperatives, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management; major universities; advisory service; and other institutions involved in Croatian agricultural development.

As a result, Croatian agriculture and agribusiness have adopted new technologies, improved operations and expanded their businesses. All those achievements contributed to the ultimate goal of enhancing the competitiveness of Croatian agribusiness. USAID is pleased that the partner organizations and family farms assisted are playing a major role in the development and growth of Croatian agriculture and agribusiness.

"Taste the Products of our Partners" is organized by USAID's Agribusiness Competitiveness Enhancement Project implemented by Development Alternatives, Inc.

USAID is the primary assistance organization of the United States Government. Since 1992, the United States has provided over $407 million to Croatia (much of it through USAID programs) to strengthen democratic institutions and assist in postwar reconstruction and the return of refugees, to support de-mining and economic development, and to provide educational and training opportunities. The U.S. has also provided guidance and support to the Croatian judicial and military sectors to further Croatia's integration in Euro-Atlantic institutions.
