Emergency and Medical Issues

Medical Information

If you become sick or injured, the Consular section can provide you with a list of local doctors, dentists, and medical specialists.

  • List of English-speaking dentists in Croatia (pdf)
  • If you are seriously injured or ill, the Consular section can assist you in finding emergency medical care, and, if you wish, inform your family and friends.

The American Embassy and its Consular section are forbidden by law to act as a guarantor for any medical bills. However, if you need funds for medical care, we can assist you in contacting family and friends to transfer money to you, and we can facilitate the transfer. In case of a life-threatening medical emergency, where medical care would be withheld absent prior payment, the Consular section can arrange for small, short-term loans. However, recipients of these loans are subject by U.S. law to travel restrictions until the loans are repaid.

    Emergency Financial Assistance

If you lose all your money and other financial resources while traveling in Croatia, consular officers can help you contact your family, bank, or employer to arrange for them to send you money.

Consular officers cannot act as lawyers, tax advisors, investigators, banks, law enforcement officers, or travel agents. Please do not expect them to find you employment, get you residence or driving permits, act as interpreters, search for missing luggage, or help you settle disputes with hotel managers. They can, however, tell you how to get help with these and other matters.
